Back in the 70's when my then wife and I lived in Portland (OR), I built a nice little 8x8x8 (with a gable roof) wire-enclosed chicken shed in the backyard and installed 6 young hens, as allowed by the City Code (which didn't allow roosters). I set it next to the garden where we'd allow the biddies to roam from time to time to scratch around and search out bugs, worms and odd seeds. They made great eggs, which, when broken into a pan, showed deep orange stand-up yolks. Also, from time to time, as the birds aged, we'd enjoy a nice, fat hen, roasted to perfection - and no, we didn't name them.
