Half-timbered old buildings in Bad Homburg

I worked at Colonial Williamsburg in the summer of 1980 under Roy Underhill. We were 18th century housewrights dressed in costumes for the public building a period timberframe. These guys from Germany came by who did historical building and restoration and commented on the modern building techniques we were using. Whereas we were in the 18th century they dealt with the 15th. We all had a good laugh. Your photos bring back that fond memory.

The framing in that gable on the first house is incredible!

Do you know if that second building's foundation sunk to cause the funky curve on the right side or perhaps it was built that way?

Craig.

I think the foundation settled here and rather than jack it up, they just went with the flow when they repaired it. The appealingness of asymmetry at work here. Alles ist nicht perfect and therein lies charm.

Hope you don't mind Lloyd, I thought I would put a link on here from an american sketch artist who is living and working in Germany, I enjoy his work and he captures the buildings beautifully. Hope you like it.
