Firewood For Next 2 Years

I continue my practice of picking up fallen trees and limbs from various roadsides. Sudden oak death has caused many oak deaths and a state botanist recently told me it's better to burn the stuff than leave it in the woods spreading the disease. This pile is mostly oak, & some cedar and eucalyptus. I'll chainsaw it up, then rent Mark's homemade splitter - about 2 years worth of heat (our only source) in house. In the office (separate building), I'll turn on a 660 watt radiant electric heater for an hour or two on cold mornings.

We just cut up a load of wood at our cabin. The lake is so high that it keeps washing into our "yard" marked by our log booms. We had pulled so much on the deck of our transition float that it was sinking. Not as much wood as yours, but when it dries it will last us for several months. The good news is that there's still lots where that came from. - Margy

LLoyd, you are the salt of the America. You and your blog/books are truly inspirational. I know that's why I come here everyday.

I love your vitality. In touch is what I say to you.

Scrap Wood

I heat with wood as well....and simply getting the word out to non-chainsaw-owning neighbors (and their spreading the word further), netted me well over a cord of free wood, with little work last spring. I plan on doing the same this spring- and in my own yard have 6 ash trees that are getting killed by something/some blight...so those are next on the block (a cord of wood in itself).

WISH I had some oak....just one alive and well scarlet oak that I won't touch.
